Freedom MapAPTOS, CA is a community to the east of Santa Cruz. It is pronounced “app-toss” not “app-tose” (a sure way to tell a local from a tourist).

FUN FACTS: Aptos is Ohlone, meaning “the people”. Aptos is home to the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (magnitude 6.9). Aptos is also known for the “World’s Shortest Parade” that is celebrated on July 4th, because the parade route is about .6 miles long.

Here are more FUN FACTS for those who love history: The Mexican government granted Rafael Castro the area, Rancho Aptos in 1833.  At first, cattle was raised, but in 1850 California became a state so Castro leased the land. The Americans built a wharf, store and mill where Aptos Village Square is currently located.

Claus Spreckels, a sugar millionaire, staring buying land from Castro in 1872. A hotel was built near the beach and a summer mansion with a racetrack for his horses. He had a large area fenced and stocked with deer for hunting. That area is now known as “Deer Park Center.”

The railroad moved the growth of Aptos to the other side of the creek.  Redwood timber harvesting became them major industry, then apples. In the 1920s, Seacliff Park and Rio Del Mar Country Club (today’s Seacliff State Beach) were developed. S.S. Palo Alto cement ship joined the area in 1929 as an amusement pier with restaurants, swimming pool, and a dance pavilion.

Cabrillo College began in 1959 and was part of the growth for Aptos. Today, Aptos is home to approximately 20,000 people (depending on what areas are actually included as ‘Aptos.’)
